IHE features this story today about a Brandeis professor accused of using insensitive terminology in class.
How did the administration respond? By telling the students that they shouldn’t be hypersensitive? Of course not. By asking the professor to be more careful in his choice of words in the future? No. By monitoring his class and demanding that he attend a re-education camp (i.e., “anti-discrimination” training)? You’ve got it.
As we have seen with many other events in academe lately, administrators often have no sense of proportionality. If members of any preferred minority group issue some complaint, they go bananas trying to appease them.
Evidently the “commitment to diversity” that’s now obligatory in higher ed means that you can never say “no” to those groups, no matter how slight the provocation.
