Campus Security: ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’?

Following the commentary at PBC on campus security, in the wake of the V. Tech massacre, Dave Taggart, a retired Army officer, emails:

Most people can’t believe the situation on college campuses.  White-washed statistics from “campus security” paint a pretty picture, when in fact the rule about crime on campus is really “don’t ask, don’t tell”.  Much of a campus security force is no better trained or armed than a Wal-Mart door-greeter, and they are usually discouraged, if not prohibited, from entering dormitories in most schools.
I laughed out loud when my wife asked, “Didn’t they have video cameras in the buildings?” What is standard in just about every hallway in every high school in America is of course an invasion of privacy on a college campus.
