The Christian Oppressor

When you spend any amount of time defending free speech and religious liberty, it’s hard not to be impressed at the sheer creativity and audacity of efforts to censor students and force them to bend to the secular-Left academic establishment. And now comes word that UC-Davis has taken political correctness to bizarre new heights. The university recently asked students to “reaffirm” the university’s “Principles of Community,” which includes lofty rhetoric against — among other things — religious discrimination.  But how does UC-Davis define religious discrimination?  Feast your eyes on this:

Religious/Spiritual Discrimination – The loss of power and privilege to those who do not practice the dominant culture’s religion. In the United States, this is institutionalized oppressions toward those who are not Christian.

In other words, if you’re Christian at UC-Davis, religious nondiscrimination rules simply don’t protect you. An atheist professor tosses you out of class? Good for him! You’re the oppressor! A Christian group is denied equal access to university facilities? Move along. Nothing to see here. But if Muslims or Hindus face persecution, then “Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!”

This morning, a group of  more than 25 anonymous students sent a letter (through an Alliance Defense Fund Allied Attorney) demanding that UC-Davis protect all religions equally. I fully hope and expect that cooler heads will prevail, and the university will reverse course. They have a week.

UPDATE:  Fox News is reporting that the University has already changed the policy.  The university is to be commended for moving so quickly.  In the last month, we’ve seen several universities move with unusual speed to correct unconstitutional or unlawful policies.  Is this a sign of increased respect for the First Amendment?
