Civic Education Abloom in Iraq?

Plans are afoot to build a private American-style university northeast of Baghdad. According to The New York Times, this will include the creation of humanities degree programs where, according to Azzam Alwash, executive secretary of the board of trustees, students will “study the ideas of Locke, the ideas of Paine and Madison.”

Should that come to pass, the new university might serve as a model for campuses within the U.S., no longer known for grounding students in an understanding of democracy and preparing the political leaders of the future.
