Civics Out of School

Here’s a USA Today editorial by Nat Hentoff on the poor quality of civics education in schools and colleges. As Hentoff recalls, “A few years ago, I supported the City University of New York’s decision mandating the teaching of American history on all its campuses. I was denounced by several department heads for ‘jingoism.’ They insisted ‘world history’ be taught instead.” Sad, not least because graduates don’t know much world history either. But there is good news, too, with the foundations Hentoff cites, along with politicians such as Lamar Alexander, who are keeping the pressure on to restore civics to the curriculum.
