For the last month, students have been traipsing across stages to receive their degrees and diplomas. Now the world is your oyster.
Well, for most students, not. Zachary Slayback points out some unpleasant truths to them in a FEE piece entitled, “You Graduated! Now Begins Your Rehabilitation.”
He argues that those who want to be successful should “deschool” themselves. “After 16 years of sitting in classrooms, turning in assignments, working to deadlines established weeks in advance, planning out your path semesters early, and jumping through hoops to move to the next level in the game, the idea that what matters in the world is the value you produce for other people comes as a shocker for many,” he writes.
Indeed it will, especially to the many students who think of “education” as something they’re entitled to and who believe that “the job” is more of the same.
And this statement probably calls for a trigger warning: “The world owes you nothing except for the value you create within it.”
