The following contretemps in New York suggests that the campus speech enforcers have been less than thoroughly vigilant, and ought to add the plight of pigeons to their list of prohibited speech:
After Brooklyn Councilman Simcha Felder this week proposed fining pigeon feeders $1,000, [City Council Speaker Christine] Quinn said she had “no use” for the “flying rats.”
Urban Wildlife Coalition founder Johana Clearfield wrote Quinn, slamming her as “clueless,” since “pigeons have nothing in common with rats” – and calling her comment an “epithet . . . much like the n-word.”
I trust that the campus police prowling about for insensitive utterances will not pooh-pooh my proposal.
