The Sacramento Bee highlights a study showing that California has the nation’s most highly educated legislature, with 90 percent holding at least a bachelor’s degree. The least educated? Arkansas. Yet which state is in greater fiscal crisis? Which state has squandered natural resources and a climate that is the envy of most nations? Which state is paying more money for worse school performance than any other state in the country? Given the leftist, identity-politics-soaked nature of most public universities, it’s hardly surprising that the state believes it can spend, spend, and spend some more — in good times and bad — and that governing coalitions are formed through the ideology of permanent grievance. While there are few cities more beautiful than San Francisco and few climates better than San Diego’s, when it comes to hope for the future, I’ll take Little Rock.
