CUNY’s New ‘White/Jewish’ Category

In a Minding the Campus essay, Professor K. C. Johnson reflects on the implications of categorizing faculty members as “white/Jewish.” The deepening obsession with each individual’s ancestry and religious affiliation is unsettling. Any why should the racial makeup of the CUNY faculty reflect the demographics of New York City any more than the racial makeup of, say, the Yankees or the New York Philharmonic does? Most people can see the folly of this approach when it comes to other professions.
