Not just the deadliest on campus, but the deadliest ever. I suppose it depends on how we define “mass shooting”–the phrase makes my mind turn to Wounded Knee or Fort Pillow–and there’s no need to make a fetish of this. Still, that’s how AP is currently describing what happened today at Virginia Tech:
Up until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby’s Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.
