Duke Open Campus Coalition Outs ‘Climate of Fear’

There is no shortage of examples of conservative students being intimidated, harassed and ridiculed on college campuses by left-liberal students and professors pushing narratives and agendas.

The good news is, the bullied are starting to fight back.

The latest example hails from Duke University, where a coalition of students has taken a stand against student protestors who’ve demanded censorship, racial employment quotas and mandatory “anti-oppression” classes – and attack anyone who thinks otherwise.

“We believe there is a large silent majority of students on campus who also think that a lot of these demands are pretty ludicrous, but they’re afraid to say things in public, or to publish something in the student newspaper, because they’re afraid of being attacked personally through [ad hominem attacks] like ‘bigot’, ‘transphobic,’ ‘heteronormative’ or ‘whitewashed’,” said Tyler Fredricks, a Duke senior studying political science and economics, in an interview with The College Fix.

Fredricks is co-leader of the newly formed “Duke Open Campus Coalition,” which penned a letter to the campus community that called for reasoned debate and free speech instead of name-calling and strong-arm tactics.

“During our time here at Duke, we have encountered a community that values identity politics over reasoned discussion and debate when confronting real—and at times misperceived—instances of injustice,” the coalition wrote. “… In this climate, fewer students feel able to speak their mind, and we are concerned that this undermines Duke’s integrity as an institution of open exchange and learning.”

The Duke students say they were inspired by a group of students at Princeton who took a similar stand against Draconian demands stemming from racially charged protests at that Ivy League school. Let’s hope it’s a trend that continues to catch on.
