Exit Strategies

More from insidehighered.com today about the role of our regional and national accreditation agencies in developing criteria for measuring what college students actually learn at the end of their 4-5 year matriculation.
Evidently, many accreditors are reluctant to sign off on a national standardized exit exam taken by undergraduates as they complete their baccalaureate.
Perhaps one unspoken reason for this reticence is the understandable fear that minority college students, admitted as freshmen with less stellar SAT scores and high school GPAs than their white and Asian cohorts, will underperform in college exit standardized tests.
When the goals of diversity and higher academic performance conflict in higher education today, as they almost always do, should anyone be surprised which goal trumps?
