According to a study by the AAUP, last year faculty compensation rose by 3.8 percent on average, surpassing the 2.5 percent rate of inflation. Inside Higher Ed has the story.
Full professors at top public universities do pretty well. Average salary for a full professor at UCLA is $133,000; at Michigan $130,000; at University of Virginia, $128,000.
Of course, some people found bad news in the report. Professors in some disciplines are paid substantially more than in others — horrors!
Said Rosemary Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Association, “The gap in pay worries me because it might discourage those who want to teach language and literature.” I doubt very much that anyone who has a strong enough love of language and literature to contemplate an academic career in the field would abandon that idea just because professors of computer science are paid more.
