Fixing the African American Studies Department

In this week’s Pope Center Clarion Call, Jay Schalin writes about the change that has been made in the African American Studies Department at UNC. The former head was found to have been very lax, giving students (especially athletes) credit for classes he didn’t actually teach. The new head is certain to be more demanding, but she is evidently cut from a very radical bolt of cloth, judging from her writings.

John McWhorter argued in this Pope Center piece that African-American Studies could embrace true learning and should not be just a venue for instilling a grievance mentality in students. It seems that UNC has not taken his advice.
