Phi Beta Cons

writes Harvard professor Ruth Wisse in The Wall Street Journal (login required), is the “gutted and gutless” refusal of elite faculties and administrators to participate in our common national defense.

Institutions such as Harvard, Columbia, Yale and Brown do “not undertake an inquiry into the reliability and adequacy of programs in Islamic and Middle East Studies, much less encourage those who ‘do well’ academically to volunteer in the national defense.” They cynically continue “to draw benefits from the system [they] will not protect.”

Yet these elites will expect and demand protection when threatened or attacked by Islamic terrorists or rogue nations. The rare academic who exposes the cynicism of the elites, such as Wisse, deserves our thanks.
