A Glimpse Into Our Future?

Kudos to the New York Times for running this article on the plight facing young, educated Europeans in a poor job market: “Europe’s Young Grow Agitated Over Future Prospects.”

The article is chock full of quotables pertaining to the perils of the “educated” in welfare states.

Giuliano Amato, economist and former Italian prime minister:

“By now, only a few people refuse to understand that youth protests aren’t a protest against the university reform, but against a general situation in which the older generations have eaten the future of the younger ones.

Francesca Esposito, who is unemployed but fluent in five languages, holds an Italian-law degree and a master’s from Germany has interned at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg:

“I have every possible certificate. . . . I have everything except a death certificate.”

“I’m a repentant college graduate. . . . If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t go to college and would just start working.”

The article is quite depressing but worth reading in its entirety. Reading it gives one the feel of watching videos of car wrecks in driver’s-education classes in order to see the consequences of making the wrong choices.
