The title of this article, “UMB refuses to set goals for minorities,” is more dramatic than its actual content. The University of Maryland, Baltimore is not actually saying that it will have a colorblind admissions policy or anything like that; it just thinks that having formal goals is courting legal trouble. That’s true, but that and the fact that the school is one-third minority and 18-percent black does not assuage the school’s critics. They want those goals, dammit!
