Government Shutdown in Michigan?

That’s the backdrop for this Inside Higher Ed piece. The state is at a political standoff over a large budget deficit and money for the state higher ed system is in dispute.

What is so precious about this is a quotation from a community college official. Referring to the budget situation, he says, “I do feel pretty good about it because the state right now has been talking about turning the economy around and the only way to turn the economy around is through education of the citizens.”
Oh dear. In a state whose economy has been eroding for years, the politicians now begin to talk about turning it around, so this poor fellow thinks it’s actually going to happen, and will happen because of more government money for higher education.
I hope he doesn’t get one of those emails from Nigeria asking for a little bit of money so he can later collect much more.
