To say ”Happy Holidays” is still to evoke the sacred, whether the speaker realizes it or not, because holiday means holy day. Even the shorthand rubric ”Xmas” can refer to Christ because X is also used to represent the Greek letter chi, first letter of the name of Christ in Greek. So it’s very hard to take the Christ out of Christmas. Still, it’s nice to hear Merry Christmas!
