Yesterday, a gunman at Northern Illinois University murdered five students and wounded 16, before killing himself. The Chicago Tribune has extensive coverage. The NIU website has lots of info. So does the school newspaper, the Northern Star.
Here’s the latest bulletin from the school:
NIU can confirm six fatalities, including the gunman. Four of the dead were female and two, including the gunman, were male. In total, there were 22 injured or killed.
NIU can confirm that the shooter was an NIU graduate student in sociology in the Spring of 2007 but was not currently enrolled.
When the Virginia Tech shooting occurred last year, I found that the best way to stay on top of breaking news was to read the Wikipedia entry. Say what you will about Wikipedia–insert caveat here–it’s a remarkable tool. Here’s the entry for the NIU shooting, which includes info I haven’t seen anywhere else, including the name of the alleged killer.
UPDATE: Six dead, not including the shooter.
CORRECTION: I guess it’s six dead, including the shooter. I must have misunderstood something this morning.
