Something a bit unusual for Harvard’s usual down-with-war, keep-ROTC-out activism: the Iran Freedom Concert, to be held at Harvard’s Leverett House Dining Hall this Saturday, from 9-11 P.M.
What’s more, an unusually broad coalition of student groups have signed on to sponsor the event, including the Harvard Republicans and Democrats, the gay rights advocacy group (BGLTSA), the campus conservative paper (The Salient), and the international students organization, among many others. These are people who rarely get along, much less collaborate; that they’ve come together for this event is as surprising as anything I’ve seen in four years of undergraduate education at Harvard.
Companion events are being held at Georgetown, Duke, the University of Pennsylvania, and at Cambridge University in England.
Event organizer Adam J. Scheuer, a senior, says the event serves two purposes–to educate Harvard students about the human rights situation in Iran (several Iranian activists will speak in between sets of rock music), and to provide moral support to young Iranians (the event has already attracted publicity on Farsi-language and other Iran-related blogs).
