Just How Low Can Standards Go?

Southern Illinois University history professor Jonathan Bean writes here about the “race to the bottom” that he sees at his school. SIU admits applicants with pathetically weak ACT scores (and, presumably, equally dismal high-school records) and then lavishes great attention on them in an effort to keep them enrolled. This is strong evidence in favor of my argument that higher education is America is terribly oversold and focuses more on quantity than quality.
