The Last Refuge of the Scoundrel

Here is a most enlightening piece, by Prof. John Ellis of UC Santa Cruz, about the tangled web of deception at UC Berkeley involving severance pay for a black woman who wasn’t severed at all.

When the story began to unravel, the officials responsible wrapped themselves in the cloak of, what else, “diversity.”

When some GOP politicians tried questioning Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac five years ago, Barney Frank and Co. used the same line — you can’t criticize us because we’re doing it for the sake of diversity.

Long ago, Samuel Johnson wrote that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel. I think we can now say that “diversity” has assumed that role.
