Today’s Pope Center piece is on the legacy of Bill Friday, longtime president of the University of North Carolina system, who died last week.
Friday was a man devoted to excellence in higher education. He famously worked against the malignant influences brought in by the mania for big-time sports. He was also, however, the great proponent of centralization of higher education in the state, and that has not, in my view, worked out very well.
