Legacy Preferences and Racial Preferences

The Century Foundation has published a new book edited by Richard Kahlenberg that argues against legacy preferences in university admissions and is discussed in the lead article on Inside Higher Education today. As I say in my posted comment to that article, I have no love for legacy preferences and indeed would favor their immediate abolition, at least at state schools. But I think the issues they raise are very different from the issues raised by preferences based on race and ethnicity. It is, in particular, quite wrong to argue that racial and ethnic admission preferences should continue for so long as legacy preferences are allowed. I explained why on National Review Online some years ago here. Racial and ethnic admission preferences should be ended immediately, whatever the ultimate fate of legacy preferences.
