Lunds University’s Course on Sharia in Europe

The Investigative Project on Terrorism describes a course offered at Lunds University on the “Application of Sharia in Sweden and the EU.” The course focuses on the development of Islamic legal tradition after the birth of Islam and how Sharia’s role evolved in the modern Muslim nation states.

But isn’t the horse, as it were, already out of the barn? As IPT notes:

What many don’t know is that Sharia is already applied here. It happens as unofficial council in Muslim associations, but also in Swedish courts in the context of private international law, when they deal with the family law of Muslim countries, which are based on Sharia. . . . Swedish and European judges [already] interpret in practice concepts from the Islamic legal tradition.
