In FIRE’s latest list of the worst colleges and universities for free speech, Marquette makes it due to its treatment of political science professor John McAdams. He has been terminated and barred from campus (!) because he had the temerity to criticize a female grad student. McAdams has tenure, but that proved to be no shield once he offended the university’s PC speech police.
He has been in limbo for many months, but Marquette finally said, “You can be reinstated but only if you apologize for your wrongdoing.” Read all about it here.
All this while, I have been in touch with the professor, who assures me that he is not going to apologize by the university’s deadline (April 4) and expects it will then fire him. At which point, he will file suit, represented by the legal team at Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty.
That case should be fascinating. We will find out if a contract can be abrogated simply because some hypersensitive academics object to a professor’s comments. However the case turns out, this is a black eye for Marquette.
