MIT: What’s with the Vetting?

Bloomberg.com reports Massachusetts Institute of Technology Dean of Admissions Marilee Jones has abjectly resigned because she falsified her resume.
In response, an MIT dean high-mindedly declares, “This is a sad and unfortunate event. The integrity of the institute is our highest priority, and we cannot tolerate this kind of behavior.”
Once past the breast-beating, the more important issue is how Jones made it through the hiring process in the first place. Prestigious campuses and state systems spend a fortune on search consultants and committee deliberations in an effort to assure the public of their competence and fairness in hiring.
MIT should get to the bottom of which persons failed to check Jones’s credentials and hold them to account.
