More on Colgate and diversity

Following up on George Leef’s posting today, here’s a link to the Colgate student newspaper’s story this week on the faculty diversity controversy there and my posting on the paper’s website:

Colgate is right to be wary of pursuing “diversity” if doing so means, as it usually does, weighing race, ethnicity, and sex in hiring and promotion decisions. Such discrimination is divisive and unfair, inevitably lowers the quality of the faculty (if you weigh skin color more, it follows that you are weighing merit less), and is illegal. Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and sex, and no federal court has ever recognized a “diversity” exception to this. Just hire the best qualified people.
