Here’s a story in Diverse on the U.S. Dept. of Ed. decision to endorse the policy allowing college applicants to fill in more than one box in the “race” category. These students will be counted as “multiracial.” The article talks about some of the complications that may result from the new count, with certain races dropping (Native American, for instance) while “multiracial” grows. It will take many years for the implications to fall out, but I have little confidence that college admissions offices will assimilate the changes forthrightly, while at the same time meeting political pressures regarding the racial make-up of their entering classes.
