Calling Their Bluff

The Left is all for college access and affordability, isn’t it? That’s why President Obama proposed “free community college,” presidential candidate Bernie Sanders wants “free college,” and Hillary Clinton favors college that is “debt free.”

So now the North Carolina legislature comes along and proposes that tuition be cut to $500 per semester at five of the system’s 16 university campuses. Three are historically black colleges and one traditionally served American Indians.

But no! The university-wide faculty senate doesn’t want that. Lower tuition would be terrible! In a letter to the university system president Margaret Spellings, the faculty group writes:

This legislation would essentially convert the minority campuses into inexpensive magnet schools for privileged and racial majority populations, with the net effect of displacing African American and Native American students, thereby fundamentally altering the tradition missions of the four named minority schools….”

A drastic cut in tuition would hurt diversity? By increasing access and affordability? That appears to be the view on the Left.
