In the second of a three-part series, the Pope Center’s Jay Schalin continues his argument against sending too many students into the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). “The roots of STEM labor gluts go back over half a century,” he writes, citing a demographer at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Indeed, a number of specialists have noticed that jobs in some of these fields are hard to find, but the news hasn’t yet reached the mainstream media or governmental agencies, which continue to press for more such graduates.
