UCLA professor Tim Groseclose writes here about a most surprising decision by the faculty there to reject a proposed general-education requirement for a course on “community and conflict in the modern world.” Many of the courses that would have satisfied the requirement are in UCLA’s various “studies” departments, such as Chicano Studies, American Indian Studies, Labor and Workplace Studies, and so on. Even though the UCLA faculty has just a miniscule percentage of faculty members on the right, the proposal was voted down 56 to 44 percent.
Perhaps the professoriate is starting to realize that higher education’s future is already precarious and pushing the curriculum further into the swamp of political correctness would be harmful.
