Overtly political required course at UC San Diego

Inside Higher Ed reports today on a controversy at UC San Diego over an overtly political course required for freshmen in one of the school’s six undergraduate colleges — Dimensions of Culture which was intended to “challenge hegemonic assumptions about race, class, gender and sexuality.” It’s supposed to be a composition course, but evidently teaching students to write well is less important than haranguing them with far-out theories on the evils of our society.
To the administration’s credit, it has decided to let go two graduate teaching assistants who were eager to restore the course to its intended, highly radical form. Now all it needs to do is find some good instructors who will just improve the students’ writing ability without loading their assignments with political indoctrination.
