The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has issued a warning to Penn State, saying that the university’s accreditation is “in jeopardy” due to the school’s handling of the Jerry Sandusky child-sex-abuse case. The commission specifically cited the report by former FBI director Louis Freeh, which alleges that senior university officials acted to cover up the abuse.
The warning is based on concerns about Penn State’s compliance with government regulations, as well as its ability to meet financial obligations stemming from penalties and pending lawsuits and financial settlements. Penn State remains accredited while “on warning,” pending a follow-up report next month.
