What do Michigan State, UMass-Amherst, and Edinburgh U. of Scotland have in common? Each has given an honorary degree to Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe.
In an eye-opening IHE article, MSU sociologist David Wiley defends his school’s choice, so far, not to revoke the degree: “He noted that plenty of honorary degree recipients – Vice President Cheney and President Clinton have also been honored at Michigan State – have done controversial things after receiving their degrees.”
