Plea to Carl Menges

A Hamilton College alumnus, Carl Menges, pledged last year he would donate $3.6 million to the proposed Alexander Hamilton Center. The distinguished scholarly project was summarily sabotaged by campus leftists and, consequently, as John has chronicled, Menges has resigned from the board of trustees.

There has been much response to the resignation, for example, here and here. Despite a few vicious remarks by some, the commentators are generally quite supportive of the AHC and Menges.

Many of us hope that he will re-deploy his magnificent gift on a campus more worthy than Hamilton College has proven to be. Menges should not give up on founding a pathbreaking program dedicated to exploring democracy’s first principles and standing as an example to all of academe.
