Prof on the Politics of Pro-Obama Crowds

Obama is “a creature of universities” and other institutions enamored of entitlement and redistribution, writes Fouad Ajami, a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University. These institutions, along with the candidate’s affluent supporters, have given him a pass on explaining the details of his economic and social agenda. They have succombed to the now dominant politics of crowds — the politics of illusion, grudge, desire for retribution, and charisma.

Herein a politics of decline, Ajami warns starkly. Such politics have ”wrecked Arab and Muslim societies” and is associated “with the temper of Third World societies.”
