Protest Trumps Academic Progress

When 24,000 or so students walked out of Los Angeles-area schools last week to protest restrictions on illegal immigration, administrators from the Los Angeles Unified School District supplied buses for transportation–as they did last year for students who attended anti-Bush and anti-war rallies.

In these and other ways the LA-area schools, as Aaron Hanscom reports, have been raising political activism among children to ever greater heights, all the while failing to educate them. Nearly half of all 11th graders in the Los Angeles Unified School District read below grade level, and the District has the third worst dropout rate in the country. Only 20 percent of its 9th graders will qualify to apply to California
