Race-Based Math

Here’s an article from the Toronto Star about a new “black-focused” curricular unit for use in Canada’s largest school system.
A representative feature of the unit is to use racial-profiling to teach math, on the assumption that it will help close the racial gap in math achievement.
The article quotes a University of Windsor education professor: ”The idea is not to get students all worked up about racial profiling, but to allow them to use data about who gets stopped by police to come up with their own conclusions and develop a critical view of the world,” Allen said this week on a visit to the Africentric summer program at Shoreham Public School, near Jane and Finch.
Note that this curricular unit is intended for middle-chool kids. Are we to believe that 12-year-olds can understand the complexities and polemics of racial profiling, develop their own “conclusions,” reach a “critical view of the world,” and, at the same time, learn basic math? Amazing how agenda-driven professors project their obsessions back upon kids who haven’t even hit puberty.
