While it is true that there are a variety of questions on the evaluations, these numerical ratings are “reminiscent of the sheets circulated after the TV pilot has just played to its sample audience in Burbank,” as Mark Edmundson observes in the article cited in my previous post.

A psychology professor at a prestigious state university once did an experiment that he told me about. In his intro psych course, one term he instituted the practice of giving a weekly quiz. That term, the students did significantly better on the exams, and he concluded that they had learned more in the course. However, his student evaluations dropped. They didn’t like the weekly quizzes.
