Re: Tucker Interview

Adding to John’s post: The interview with Sara Martinez Tucker wasn’t promising. So much said, and so little content. The statements she made that centered upon education (not access to it, etc.) were few, just some words about “adult literacy” and the pledge, “when I leave here, I hope all 50 states have high school graduation standards aligned with the world of work and the world of college.” And notice how oriented the vision was around business and the work place. Nothing about liberal arts learning, civic knowledge and citizenship, and cultural enrichment. The dispositions are clear.  Workplace readiness is crucial, of course, but so is the study and acquisition of the wisdom and beauty of the past, the moral meaning of human existence, and the secular and religious foundations of civilization. And we need more standard bearers for them.
