One other writer who has noticed that “affirmative action” in universities is just about preferences for some kids from “underrepresented” groups whose families are nevertheless affluent is Walter Benn Michaels. His new book, The Trouble with Diversity, argues that the diversity mania is much ado about nothing. That’s the good part of the book. Unfortunately, his main point is that the silly diversity crusade has diverted the left from the real issue it should focus on, namely inequality. The book is a naïve call for a vast increase in governmental projects to redistribute income, but at least he gets it right that “diversity” is mainly about deciding which kids from wealthy families get into Michigan, Harvard, etc.
