Having recently completed the obligatory tour of college campuses prior to my daughter’s graduation from high school, I think it is safe to say that the reason colleges are attempting to minimize the number of cars on campus has nothing to do with the environment, global warming, or any other idealistic buncomb, but with the very mundane and pragmatic reason that there is no place to park on campus. There is no point in bringing a car to school if there is no place to put it.
Most colleges in any case seem to have a policy against freshmen bringing cars with them, and even so, parking is at a premium. Our daughter would not have brought her car with her, even if it was allowed, and a less environmentally concerned student you would be hard-pressed to find.
However, I am sure that college administrators are grateful for the global warming cant, which provides them with idealistic cover for what must be a very unpopular decision on their parts.
