Reader Mail re: Citizen of the World

Yes, citizen of the world has a lot of resonance. Much of it negative.
We want our children to feel themselves part of something bigger, but we want it to be something we think of as good. The citizen-of-the-world types are, in my experience, people with a dream of how other people should be forced to behave.
Harsh? I’m afraid so. But they are the ones who want to erase the cultures of the world by puréeing them together until they are bland and indistinguishable.
Figures of speech have connotations. They evoke different associations from different people. You can’t pick and choose among the connotations.
