One thing absent in the public quick-read information is whether or not the authors controlled for the demographic distribution of candidates across disciplines. Some fields (engineering, math) skew decidedly male and international and are generally considered “faster-paced” degrees than say linguistics or biology.
I would suspect at least some of the observable gap is likely indirectly due from this linkage.
