In light of the discussion of Wendy Shalit’s review and the hookup culture on college campuses, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight the work of some young women who are rebelling against the hookup culture. The Arizona State University chapter of the Network of Enlightened Women is hosting their First Annual Gentlemen’s Showcase on March 3rd, where they will honor the top ten gentlemen at Arizona State University. Students have been nominating gentlemen for the past month. These ladies have created a promotional video asking students questions such as “What is a gentleman?” and “Are gentlemen extinct?” The answers vary from the comical to the serious.
In an environment where the hookup culture thrives, it is even more important to encourage good behavior. This is what these NeW ladies are doing. This is a step in the right direction.
