Religious Freedom on Campuses

Yesterday was Religious Freedom Day on Capitol Hill, sponsored by Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. FIRE’s Greg Lukianoff spoke on how universities routinely silence religious opinions on campuses by forcing student organizations to adopt “nondiscrimination” policies that undermine their freedom of association.
In a still all too relevant essay, “Rule by Those of Little Faith,” I addressed this issue, commenting further that colleges have often scapegoated, and imposed a brazen double standard on, traditional religious believers, especially Christians and Jews. (See The Chronicle of Higher Education, February 22, 2002.) Here FIRE also highlights that double standard.
