The Representativeness of the Gates Affair

Last night I heard Professor Gates on CNN saying that his experience revealed to him “how vulnerable all black men are, how vulnerable all people of color are and all poor people to capricious forces like a rogue policeman. And this man clearly was a rogue policeman.” (I found the quote here after typing into Google words from memory.)  In extending his case to “all poor people,” Gates may be overplaying his hand. This comes, I think, from too quickly understanding individual experience in group terms. Once you start, it’s hard to know where to draw the line.

Furthermore, Cafferty, who came in after the quote, noted that Crowley is no “rogue,” but rather has a record of teaching against racial profiling at the Lowell Police Academy.
