It’s kind of ironic that the proposal to grant an honorary degree to Condoleezza Rice is being protested at Boston College, as if she were in such opposition to today’s campus ideologies. Rice–I’m very sorry to have to say–mentions herself as a diversity appointment very frequently. Years ago she said she was happy that in the Republican Party she was not treated as a woman or a black, but she frequently presents herself that way now. She has recently said that when she finishes her term as Secretary of State, there will not have been a white man in that post for twelve years, as if that alone were some kind of achievement. I don’t think that’s the kind of thing that should be stressed and emphasized, especially by Republicans.
